Ph.D. Candidate - Materials Science & Engineering

Minneapolis, Minnesota, United States

-(2021-present) High resolution chemical mapping of supported lipid monolayers using atomic force microscopy – infrared spectroscopy (AFM-IR). Surface composition was related to changes in film topography, friction, and adhesion using a combination of dynamic (AC/tapping), contact, and force-volume AFM modes. Collaboration with Dr. Greg Haugstad (Director, UMN Characterization Facility).(2020-2022) Led collaborative effort (Squires Group, UCSB) to elucidate the relationship between the interfacial rheological properties (shear and dilatational, via a novel micro-button rheometer) and the interfacial microstructure (via confocal microscopy) of model lung surfactant monolayers as they relate to possible physiological function. Manuscript in preparation. (2018-2021) Discovered a spontaneous and reversible circle-to-stripe transition in self-assembled crystalline/fluid coexisting phospholipid monolayers. Used confocal microscopy and the Langmuir balance technique to characterize the influence of composition, temperature, and monolayer compression on the shape transition. Connected experimental results to theory to generalize observations to other systems. Publication in Science Advances.
