There are 3 projects I am helping with- Imperiled Cats, Polar Bear, and Rhino. The project of main focus for me is the rhino one. CREW has collaborated with other institutions to create the American Institute of Rhinoceros Science (AIRS). AIRS is focusing on 4 main pillars- physical fitness, iron overload, reproduction, and overall heath. At CREW, we are focused on the reproduction pillar. This includes hormone monitoring and sperm evaluations. Day to day tasks consist of supervising/managing volunteers, dish washing/sterilization, inventory, sample weighing, fecal extractions, sperm morphology, sperm viability and acrosome assessments, running ELISA hormone assays, ELISA data entry, and running hormone assays, including total protein, creatinine, and alkaline phosphates. I also travel with the AIRS team at CZBG to assist with semen collections. I also help monitor other animals including armadillo, hippo, and bat eared fox.
