My first placement on the NHS Graduate Management Training Scheme was as Assistant Manager in Trauma & Orthopaedics at GWHFT, assisting the Head of Service in the day to day running of the Department, as outlined above. In August 2011, my placement manager left to take up a new role and I took on the full management of the Department.

Responsible for commissioning of Cystic Fibrosis services across the South West, in line with new national service specifications. This involved working with provider organisations to ensure standards were met. Supported the Director of Commissioning with the project management of the delivery of a Strategic Decision Making Framework for Specialised Commissioning in the South West. Developed a market testing tool to support commissioners where reconfiguration of services may be required. Supported members of the team with QIPP and CQUIN plans. Was able to attend regional and national meetings of NHS England to gain a good understanding of this new organisation.
Graduate Trainee (General Management)
In addition to work placements, the scheme enabled me to undertake an eight week period of orientation within acute, community, primary, commissioning, ambulance, mental health and social services organisations, as well as local charities, in order to gain a deeper understanding of the NHS system. The academic elements of the scheme led to me completing a Post Graduate Diploma in Health and Public Leadership in 2012, and I converted this to an MSc in 2013. I attended experiential learning through the Kings Fund as part of the scheme, focusing on a number of cross cutting themes in the NHS. I also received coaching through an Action Learning Set, which my peers and I have continued independently following the end of the scheme. The scheme also encouraged me to gain mentors and a coach, with whom I remain in contact.
