I interacted with the public on a daily basis, maintained community contacts and wrote an average of two stories each day.

As an intern, I took general assignment stories on the metro desk until the end of August. After that, I filled in as the full-time reporter covering Roscoe, Rockton and South Beloit (three municipalities north of Rockford, Ill.), writing two stories a day and often taking photos.

I hired and trained new employees, and assigned breaking news stories during the day. I also wrote stories when I got a chance.

I ran the daily budget meeting, worked with section editors, edited stories, worked with the advertising manager, oversaw night production, proofed pages and dealt with public inquiries.

As a reporting intern, I wrote on a variety of things: a vineyard wedding, a hazardous materials practice situation, a high school graduation and the local honor guard's duties at veteran funerals, to name a few.

I covered the midterm elections in fall 2006: the gubernatorial election, the 14th Congressional District race and the local representative race for Illinois House. I also wrote about women in politics, Black Friday shoppers, a charity run, and I covered Barack Obama's announcement of his candidacy for president in Springfield, Ill.
