We know that most sites of the body that were thought to be sterile actually harbour low numbers of microorganisms. These sites, also know as low microbial biomass environments are highly prone to background levels of DNA from reagents, equipment, and even on surfaces and in the air. When this background level of DNA has been accounted for, we can start to better understand the change in microbial structure of human low microbial biomass environments when we are exposed to different outside environments, disease, and medical treatment.

Women'S And Children'S Hospital

During my final year of my BSc (Biomedical) degree, I was offered a research laboratory placement at the Women's and Children's Hospital, Adelaide. With Dr. Sharon Byers as my supervisor, I was given a project to investigate the underling causes of neurological defects in Mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS) IIIA mice models. The aim of this project was to investigate whether the glucosaminoglycans (GAGs) that accumulate in MPS disorders affect the differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) down the neurogenic lineage. This was achieved by culturing normal MSCs in the presence of GAG isolated form MPS I, II, IVA and VI urine and neurogenic medium. Gene expression of early and late neuronal markers were measured after 7 and 14 days post the induction of retinoic acid (post-RA).
