About Caitlin Spind
I am passionate about New England coastal sustainability, conservation and restoration; from our rocky shores to coastal streams, from algae and marine invertebrates to diadromous fish, I hope to apply my wide knowledge and experience to this crucial field.I widened my knowledge in marine science by completing an MS with Northeastern University's Three Seas Program. This accelerated program blends field-based courses and independent research. Courses focus on research, sustainability, conservation and restoration in the Northwest Atlantic, tropics, and North Pacific. My MS culminated in a 6-month research internship at the University of New Hampshire's Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping (CCOM), researching applications of drone technology in measuring both habitat complexity and its implications in the Gulf of Maine's rocky shore communities.Since graduating, I worked with MA Division of Marine Fisheries (DMF) in New Bedford with the Diadromous Fish Project as a Fisheries Technician. I assisted with several field based projects monitoring River Herring, American Eels, Rainbow Smelt, American Shad and other species through fyke and seine netting, Sherman traps (glass eels), baited eel pots (yellow eels), underwater video and electronic counters, and others.

Caitlin Spind work experience
A career timeline built from the work history available for this profile.
Diadromous Fisheries Technician
I monitored smelt, herring, lamprey, shad and eel populations via fyke and swine nets, baited traps, video and electric counters. I also collected water quality data in lake and stream habitats: temperature, pH, turbidity, salinity and DO%. I assisted in performing habitat assessments of lake and stream habitats: identifying aquatic plants and algae, benthic characterization and water quality. We processed herring to obtain biological metrics including length, weight, sex and otoliths extractions. We also collected length and weight of American eels at glass, elver and yellow stages. The yellow eels were PIT tagged for a mark and recapture study. We collaborated with town conservation groups, volunteers, and landowners to ensure fish passage through managing fishway flow and maintaining stream habitats.
Research Intern
While interning at UNH's Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping (CCOM) under Dr. Jenn Dijkstra, I studied intertidal ecology with drone technology and 3D-models. We were interested in how habitat complexity in New England's rocky intertidal influences mobile invertebrate communities. I used survey grade mapping techniques (TRIMBLE GNSS and Total Station) to generate highly accurate 3D-models. The models were created with the photogrammetry software Agisoft Metashape. My work culminated in a manual for model creation from drone collected images and GNSS/Total station collected coordinates, a manuscript submitted for completion of my masters program, and a presentation at Northeastern University's Marine Science Center in Nahant, MA. I also assisted in monitoring oyster populations for a restoration project between the Dijkstra Lab and The Nature Conservancy located at the Great Bay in Durham, NH. The monitoring was conducted via SCUBA to record adult survival and recruit presence.
Operations/Sales Associate
I generated over $5,000 in dive equipment revenue, assembled an updated inventory, and received equipment for repairs. I also filled tanks and prepared them for hydrostatic testing. I advised customers on gear purchases and aided in SCUBA Basic Open Water Course coordination.
Vertebrate Paleontology Transcription Intern
At the Museum of Comparative Zoology (MCZ), I orchestrated paleontology research on a group of gigantic, avian Cuban fossils. I problem-solved to develop a transcription method by comparing various dictations tools. I also maintained efficient organization to successfully meet long-term internship goals.
Research Assistant
I assisted throughout the immunoassay procedure, as well as with receiving, processing, and aliquoting samples. I also utilized several computer programs (e.g. LIMS and Fluidigm) used to collect, store and analyze PCR results.
Dragonfly Monitoring Intern
I monitored dragonflies by identifying species, count, sex, and behavior per habitat type. I also designed a streamlined, digital data system to better organize future entries. Additionally, I photographed insects for identification and the Mass Audubon catalog.
Teaching Assistant
I assisted biology students in microscopy for the lab of ‘Diversity and Ecology’. I facilitated a species interaction experiment to investigate nitrogen fixation, as well as set up slides and living specimens for class.
Intertidal Ecology Intern
Intertidal biodiversity data was collected for several long-term monitoring programs with varying methodology. I identified all species within each transect, analyzed data for poster presentation and database. Through this research, we documented shifts in species distribution and abundance due to climate change.
Horticulture Intern
I designed fall layout of winter conservatory and led volunteers in weekly projects, as well as utilized gardens and library resources to expand my botanical knowledge. Developed horticulture techniques: planting, pruning, propagation, weed ID and removal.
