Using GIS tools to process and analyze Automatic Identification System (AIS) data, my research examines spatial and temporal variability in commercial shipping traffic around San Francisco Bay. I am especially interested in looking at how the California Air Resources Board's 2009 "fuel rule" has influenced patterns of cargo ships. Understanding these dynamic traffic patterns is necessary for a more realistic assessment of ship strike risk for endangered whales sharing this area.

I led a team of five students on a project involving a geospatial assessment of harmful algal blooms along the California coast using NASA Earth Observing Systems, such as the MODIS sensor and Jason-2 satellite. My responsibilities included initiating and developing relationships with collaborators, including the CA Dept of Public Health, the UC Davis Bodega Marine Lab, and Moss Landing Marine Lab.
