About Caitlin Tice, Phd

I am an instructor at Rowan University, where I investigate the molecular and cellular mechanisms of HIV-associated neurocognitive disorder (HAND). HAND affects half of the people living with HIV and impairs their quality of life and cognitive function. My research aims to uncover how HIV alters the expression and localization of aquaporin-4 (AQP4), a water channel protein involved in the glymphatic system, which is responsible for clearing metabolic waste and toxins from the brain.I have over eight years of experience in biomedical research, spanning the fields of neuroscience, cancer, and gene editing. I earned my PhD in Biomedical Sciences from Temple University, where I worked in the laboratory of Dr. Dianne Langford and published multiple peer-reviewed papers on HIV and AQP4. I also completed a two-year fellowship at the National Cancer Institute, where I improved the culturing of metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer cells from patient-derived xenografts. I am certified by CITI Program in biomedical research, good clinical practice, and practice runs training. I am passionate about advancing translational science and developing novel therapeutic strategies for neurological and oncological diseases.

Full-time Instructor in the Department of Cell Biology and Neuroscience at Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine, with a secondary appointment in the School of Translational Biomedical Engineering and Sciences, both within the Virtua Health College of Medicine and Life Sciences at Rowan University.
  • Rowan University
    Postdoctoral Researcher
    Rowan University Apr 2023 - Nov 2024
    Stratford, New Jersey, United States
As a postdoctoral researcher at Rowan University, my focus lies in investigating the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying HIV-associated neurocognitive disorder (HAND), which affects half of individuals living with HIV, impairing their quality of life and cognitive function. Specifically, my research aims to elucidate how HIV alters the expression and localization of aquaporin-4 (AQP4), a water channel protein crucial for the glymphatic system's function in clearing metabolic waste and toxins from the brain.
  • Temple University - Lewis Katz School Of Medicine
    Phd Candidate
Temple University - Lewis Katz School Of Medicine Sep 2018 - Apr 2023
    Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States
As a PhD candidate in Dr. Dianne Langford’s laboratory, I researched how HIV induces AQP4 mislocalization via A2aR leading to HIV-Associated Neurocognitive Disorders (HAND) through glymphatic system dysfunction. HAND occurs in 50% of people with HIV causing decreased quality of life. The impact of this research will show that HIV induces AQP4 mislocalization through A2aR mechanistically altering AQP4 in astrocytes leading to glymphatic dysfunction resulting in HAND. Elucidating this mechanism will allow for potential new targets for medical intervention.
  • National Cancer Institute (Nci)
Post-Baccalaureate Cancer Research Training Award (Crta) Fellow
National Cancer Institute (Nci) Jun 2016 - Aug 2018
    Bethesda, Maryland, United States
I completed my Post-Baccalaureate Cancer Research Training Award (CRTA) Fellowship at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the Laboratory of Genitourinary Cancer Pathogenesis of Dr. Kathy Kelly at the National Cancer Institute. My project in the Kelly laboratory specifically focused on how to improve the culturing of metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC) from LuCaP patient-derived xenograft (PDX) lines. The few prostate cancer cell lines that do exist do not properly represent the genetic diversity of the disease, nor do they accurately predict in vivo response as CRPC is a genetically heterogeneous disease.
  • Washington & Jefferson College
    Undergraduate Researcher
    Washington & Jefferson College Jan 2015 - May 2016
    Washington, Pennsylvania, United States
At Washington and Jefferson College, I independently researched the effectiveness of five FDA-approved drugs compared to five holistic compounds that both target Topoisomerase II by looking at their ability to induce apoptosis in HeLa cells. I was interested in researching this topic as more people are now self-medicating due to the increasing costs of cancer treatment. I wanted to see if there was any truth to these claims and if they proved to be a safe treatment option. I presented my findings at the 251st Annual American Chemical Society conference in San Diego in 2016.
  • Washington & Jefferson College
    Teaching Assistant
    Washington & Jefferson College Aug 2013 - May 2016
    Washington, Pennsylvania, United States
Taught lab techniques, instructed use of lab equipment, and reviewed exam questions with students. Graded papers, presentations, and exams.
  • University Of Pittsburgh
    Summer Research Student
University Of Pittsburgh May 2015 - Aug 2015
    Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States
During the summer of 2015, I had the opportunity to work in the laboratory of Dr. Diane Carlisle at the University of Pittsburgh’s Department of Neurological Surgery. My research focused on creating a three-dimensional neuron model from Human Embryonic Stem Cells (hESCs) to test drugs for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). I designed a protocol that allowed for the simultaneous co-differentiation of hESCs into motor neurons and glial cells. This is significant as most ALS drugs are tested by growing both cell types separately and then combining both cell types, which does not accurately represent what would happen in the patient.
