About Caitlyn Davis

I am a chemical engineer optimistically seeking innovative solutions to complex problems. I love working at the interface of biology, chemistry, and engineering through my work as a fermentation process engineer. My favorite question to ask of the process is "Is this process variation, or does it just grow that way?"My favorite question to ask people is "What's your favorite challenge that you've worked on?" One of my favorite day to day challenges is continuously striving to improve fermentation yields while reducing variation in the process.I constantly search for new problems and challenges by digging through data and talking to my coworkers. I believe problems can be solved better and faster when people work together dynamically, so I frequently seek out help from my peers. I ask a lot of questions, too, because I want to learn, improve, and identify new challenges. Outside of work, I enjoy running, cycling, rock climbing (indoor and outdoor), and cooking without a recipe. I'm always up for a new adventure.

  • Burt'S Bees
    Process Development Intern
    Burt'S Bees Jan 2017 - Jul 2017
    Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina Area
As an intern for Burt's Bees, I worked as a part of the process development group in R&D. I actively engaged with my fellow engineers and with scientists in product development and packaging development. I applied my knowledge of heat transfer and mixing to contribute to new processes and make recommendations for how to better mix and fill products in the future. In addition, I developed protocols for multiple analysis tools to help engineers and scientists gain a greater understanding of the products they're working with, such as color cosmetics, emulsions, and lip balms, to provide a more consistent product to the customer. As part of one of my projects, I also identified a cost savings of $400,000/annually.Overall from working as an intern at Burt's Bees, I enjoyed a fast paced environment and juggling as many as eight projects of varying importance at one. During my brief time, I grew as an engineer and scientist. I worked with and learned more about non-Newtonian fluids, heat transfer, mixing efficiency, and design of experiments. I appreciated the support of my coworkers who were always available to answer my questions whether they related to how to use a piece of equipment or an in depth explanation of the nitty-gritty science. I value the opportunity to work with a group of passionate and curious people.
