When I started my first job at the Huntingburg Public Library, I never imagined it would turn into a lifelong passion and career. At only sixteen years old this job showed me the possibilities, challenges, and fun of library work. I haven't always worked in libraries. Before coming here, I worked in the call center of IU Credit Union. I also worked summers at Holiday World in the kitchen of the Thanksgiving-themed restaurant. Little did I know these two jobs would ultimately help me immensely in the library world!At Holiday World I learned how to perform under pressure (our turkey legs were a big deal- and when daily park attendance reached near 20,000, you better believe we had to keep up with demand!). I also learned how to manage multiple projects at one time, as well as managing stock and supplies. All of these skills come in handy daily with my work at the library. I know how to keep my cool when I unexpectedly have to cover a storytime for a coworker, and I always make sure our programming supplies are well stocked.The accomplishment I'm most proud of at the library came as a direct result of working at Holiday World. In January of 2018 I started a program called Kids Cooking Class. This program helps teach children in grades 3-5 how to prepare their own healthy snacks and meals. By working at Holiday World I founded one of my passions in cooking. The food safety and service skills I learned help me every time I plan and facilitate this very popular program. I started at IU Credit Union as a teller and later found success as a Member Service Support Representative in the call center. At this job I often helped members navigate our online services and mobile app through the phone. I learned how to navigate nearly every possible web browser and gained valuable technology teaching skills. The library is seen as the one-stop-shop for all of your needs. This is especially true for technology needs. The teaching skills I learned at the credit union come in handy every day when I help a patron with Overdrive or Hoopla. In my current position I plan children's programs, I do community outreach, I help with collection development such as reordering books and weeding, I make book displays, I schedule and supervise three direct reports, I help patrons with their technology, I do reader's advisory for both children and adults, and I provide a friendly face and a listening ear to our community. Every day at the library is different, challenging, thought-provoking, exciting, and fun. It is such an honor to be part of a core community service!
