My research focuses on reliability, risk and resilience in energy systems design and operation. Projects include: reliability-based optimization for offshore wind systems; human-grid interaction impacts on distribution system resilience; and standards development for wave resource assessment and wave energy converter power production; and hybrid power plants for resilience.

I gained knowledge and experience in dredging and capping project management and design, as well as in DTS cable applications, groundwater monitoring, environmental project regulation and permitting, and environmental forensics laboratory techniques.

Writing and revising code in Netlogo, Clark optimized number and placement of vertical evacuation structures to reduce mortality. The current program is an agent-based system modeling the evacuation of Seaside, Oregon under a Cascadia Subduction Zone event tsunami. Inputs for agent decisions include mode of transportation (car, walk), speed of transportation, and lag time before evacuation. Revised code now includes the placement of vertical evacuation towers in most efficient numbers and placements, and the input for agents to either use towers or not.

The P3 project is a national competition funded by the US Environmental Protection Agency used to promote innovative engineering and research to better the life on this planet in the face of environmental degradation. The Oregon State University Team is focusing on researching and developing alternative mulch with industry partners out of flax shive that would replace plastic mulch in agriculture practice. Individually, Clark has assisted with field trials, and is responsible for generating a Life Cycle Analysis for chive mulch, plastic mulch, and the industry leading alternative mulch.

As part of the College of Engineering's initiative to recruit and retain quality students across their engineering disciplines, Clark leads high school presentations, Engineering Row tours, outreach events, study tables for current students, and publicity projects.

Clark serves as an adventure sport lead, raft guide, and also a management member for the Outdoor Recreation Center at the Dixon Recreation Center at Oregon State University, which includes assisting clients in planning their own outdoor recreational travels, renting equipment to clients, connecting clients with resources for their interests, and maintaining equipment in the center. As a lead, she is also hired to take clients on university-sponsored trips.

Under the funding of an Honors College and REU grant, Clark conducted original research at the Benthic Ecology Lab under Dr. Sarah Henkel. Her research was a baseline study for the Ocean Sentinel project (Northwest National Marine Renewable Energy Center), studying flatfish dietary conditions as a proxy for ecological effects associated with wave energy devices.

Cork, Ireland

Working in Europe's first marine reserve, Clark designed, completed and presented an original biological project on organism settlement onto the brown invasive algae, Sargassum muticum. During this experience, Clark also collaborated on other projects with fellow International Research Experience for Students (IRES) Program scientists, as well as a long-term monitoring survey associated with University of Bristol. Skills used and learned include snorkeling surveys, algae and invertebrate identification, plankton tow and analysis, hydrology monitoring, and benthic sampling.

Clark was awarded a fully-funded internship to assist with biological research on global climate change in the delicate transition zone between the Arctic Tundra and the Boreal Forest in Churchill, Manitoba, Canada. Specifically responsible for taking data on water quality in the wetlands’ unique hydrological conditions (a transition from the freshwater estuaries to the marine water in the Hudson Bay) and habitat characteristics in correlation with life histories and distributions of three types of stickleback fish, the boreal chorus frog and the wood frog.
