Lead experimental physicist on new quantum hardware technologies from design and theory, through manufacturing, delivering to production. Major projects:* Our 19-qubit QPU, deployed at end of 2017. Managed project and system integration, supervised testing.* Our state-of-the-art, 3D-integrated QPU prototype in 2018. Defined experimental roadmap, test protocols, and specifications. Led testing and reporting of results.* Performance-critical reduction in crosstalk. Contributed to the successful design and implementation, led testing, and delivered result 10x better than target and 6 months early on a 12-month timeline.* Formed and led a task force that produced a >10x precision improvement to our predictive device metrology.
  • Rigetti Computing
    Quantum Engineer
    Rigetti Computing Jun 2015 - Jun 2017
    Berkeley, California, Us
Founding experimental physicist at the Rigetti Computing laboratory. Helped build from an empty room to a high throughput quantum test facility, and brought several key technologies to production readiness at Rigetti.* Installed and maintained the company's first three dilution refrigerators and electronics testbeds.* Contributed to the company's first generation of QPU calibration software.* Characterized early device prototypes.
  • Uchicago Argonne Llc
    Graduate Research Fellow
Uchicago Argonne Llc Aug 2006 - May 2015
2011-present:PhD thesis project: Beta-delayed Neutron Studies using an Ion Trap* Managed a cutting-edge nuclear physics experiment, based on a revolutionary measurement technique, to successful completion under deadline.* Installed and calibrated a complex array of radiation detectors and programmable electronics.* Wrote data-acquisition software (C and CAMAC); acquired and managed a 2-TB dataset.* Optimized the next generation of experiment using ion-beam simulation and 3D modeling.* Built and maintained a suite of dozens of scalable analysis programs (C++ and ROOT).* Wrote scripts (Windows, Bash, and Python) to automate workflow.* Designed a mathematical model of the experiment and validated it with a detailed Monte Carlo simulation. For 10 delayed-neutron precursor isotopes:* Measured delayed-neutron branching ratios with 10% relative accuracy.* Measured delayed-neutron energy spectra with 15% energy resolution.2009-2011:Improving Nuclear Mass Measurements, and Liquid Nitrogen Pump* Invented a liquid nitrogen (LN2) pump costing ~20x less than existing designs.* Designed, built, and installed a cryogenic ion trap to allow LN2 cooling (3x performance improvement).* Built finite-element simulations of electromagnetic fields in 3 types of ion traps.* Optimized measurement performance using ion-beam simulations and 3D modeling (2x improvement in accuracy).2005-2009:High-Accuracy Nuclear Mass Measurements* Built and commissioned a laser-ablation ion source allowing any stable isotope to be measured.* Implemented state-of-the-art experimental techniques (3x improvement in accuracy).* Composed interface for model choice, parameter control, visualization, and result logging.* Performed exhaustive study of systematic effects influencing measurement.* Measured 4 nuclear mass-differences of interest. These remain the most accurate measurements ever made in my lab.
