Vertical Farm Manager And EducatorMontessori School Of Denver Nov 2017 - Jun 2022Greater Denver AreaThe Vertical Farm at Montessori School of Denver is a hydroponic farm housed in an up-cycled shipping container, modified as an educational environment for K-8 students. Leafy greens are grown using nutrient film technique (NFT), vining crops are grown in a Bato bucket system, and perennial herbs are grown using deep water culture (DWC). As the Vertical Farm Manager, Caleb is responsible for managing all operations of the farm, including: -Creating a sustainable planting schedule for the farm -Ordering and purchasing all of the farm supplies -Managing the Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) Program, which Caleb created -Diagnosing and repairing technical equipment issues -Maintaining a sanitary farm environment and complying with all food safety regulations -Implementing the Integrated Pest Management Program, which Caleb created -Optimizing farm operations to reduce costs and energy use -Applying for grants to support on-going financial needs of the farmWhen Caleb started this position, the Vertical Farm was not actively producing food for the school community. Within the first 6 months, Caleb was able to operate the Farm at full capacity and created a CSA Program that supported 20 families. To date, Caleb has grown and sold more than 1,000 pounds of produce for the MSD Community. Caleb was responsible for winning a $2,500 grant through the American Heart Association. This grant money was used to build a new Bato bucket system for growing vining crops, which has grown more than 100 pounds of produce in its first year of operation.As part of this role, Caleb has become an accomplished teacher, working with Montessori students of all ages.
