Profile bio

About Caleb Bagley, Phd

I am an analytical scientist most comfortable at the intersection of scientific questions and business challenges. I have extensive mass spectrometry (MS) innovation experience, both during my PhD research and most recently at a multi-national CDMO. My technical and scientific expertise were expanded to meet the extended characterization needs of clients and informed my leadership in successful implementation of organization-wide cloud-based data analysis solutions. As part of those responsibilities, I have acted as an internal consultant, taking feedback from management and clients to design and implement the best analysis and reporting platform that enables the company to save more than $100K per year in increased efficiency. My long-term desire is to increase the value my organization offers our clients by solving problems from both the technical and practical sides by deeply understanding the problem, aligning objectives, and implementing cutting-edge innovation. Along the way I hope to communicate the unique value we offer to experts and a general audience alike.

Managed advancing mass spectrometry-based extended characterization techniques and technologies. Accountable for ensuring extended characterization needs of each client and their molecule were met. Evaluated based on ability to hit client and regulator timelines efficiently and professionally.• Tasked with re-imagining the MS data analysis and reporting for all platform workflows (Intact and Reduced Mass, Host Cell Protein, N-Glycan, Peptide Map, Sequence Variant Analysis, Disulfide Mapping). Considered needs and preferences of clients and management to generate data reporting standards. Learned and implemented Byosphere data analysis and reporting across US and UK analytical development teams and demonstrated greater than $100K per year in efficiency gains.• Tasked with becoming the primary or secondary SME for five different mass spectrometers (Thermo Exploris 240, Waters Cyclic, Sciex ZenoTOF 7600, Waters BioAccord, Waters G2-XS). Designed experiments to improve four platform MS-characterization assays and compared their performance across each instrument. Determined which instruments were best suited for each assay to best characterize each molecule providing confidence for clients and regulatory agencies. • Trusted by management with solving the most complex MS-characterization challenges and presenting data and conclusions to major clients. • Successfully managed multiple client timelines in a fast-paced CDMO environment. Characterized biomolecules with traditional (HPLC, UPLC, UV-VIS, SEC, CE-SDS) and advanced (LC-MS, CZE-MS, ICIEF-MS, SEC-MS) analytical techniques. Provided high quality data in a timely manner and ensured clients hit key deadlines.

Advisor: David C. Muddiman, Jacob and Betty Belin Distinguished Professor of Chemistry (2005 through present) and Director, Molecular Education, Technology and Research Innovation Center (METRIC). Drove forward innovative mass spectrometry imaging analysis of biological samples. Evaluated based on publishing and presenting high quality research.• Authored ten peer-reviewed scientific publications and gave five scientific presentations based on innovative research projects focused on expanding the usefulness of Infrared Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption Electrospray Ionization (IR-MALDESI) technique for mass spectrometry imaging. Several papers were highlighted as important contributions to the field by publications such as Nature, and several presentations won departmental awards.• Collaborated with biopharmaceutical industry partners to improve IR-MALDESI high-throughput screening (HTS) capabilities. Incorporated novel IR lasers and evaluated capacity to desorb molecules in MALDESI experiments. Collaboration with Abbvie led to the first industrial application of MALDESI technology in a high-throughput industrial application. • Drove efforts to expand the capabilities of IR-MALDESI and associated data analysis platforms for low mass-to-charge biomolecular ions in mammalian tissues, cyanobacteria and plants. Gained extensive experience with MSiReader, METASPACE, Qualbrowser, and online metabolomics databases such as METLIN, LipidMaps, and PlantCyc. • Authored or co-authored multiple successful funding applications for personal and R1 level research funding.
