In the Spring 2024 semester, I received the UTRA award to collaborate with Dr. Matthew Murphy on the project "An intervention to improve HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis initiation, adherence and linkage to care for recently incarcerated men who inject drugs.” The research project comprises a novel area of clinical research that meets a growing public health need as people who inject drugs (PWID) represent a disproportionate number of new HIV cases with limited knowledge about the programming and linkage to care needed to support and promote pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) usage among this population. To improve our understanding of PrEP use among male PWID, qualitative interviews will be conducted in English with 20 incarcerated men who inject drugs to evaluate barriers and facilitators to PrEP initiation, adherence, and linkage to care after release from incarceration. The study will provide important information on effective approaches to preventing HIV infection among this uniquely vulnerable population.

As a Community Based Learning and Research Fellow, I will work with Professor Irene Glasser to plan and implement her undergraduate courses titled Anthropology of Addictions and Recovery and Anthropology of Homelessness. My work consists of traditional Teaching Assistant duties like assignment planning and office hours, but it will also emphasize establishing and maintaining community relationships. This role will allow me to better my community engagement skills while also teaching students about the importance of researching issues that impact the experience of their local community.

This position required me to use qualitative data analysis to examine overdose prevention site regulations and policy across the United States. Additionally, I interviewed community health organizations and local politicians to gain insight into what influenced Rhode Island’s legalization of overdose prevention sites. The data gained during this position will be used to create a policy toolkit that can serve as a blueprint for other states interested in this legislation.By examining the political regulations of overdose prevention sites, I was able to construct an infographic for community organizations. This infographic introduces what overdose prevention centers are, how they are regulated, who they have been endorsed by, what effects they have, and other information.This position has enhanced my ability to analyze healthcare policy, engage and introduce findings to community members, and create accessible mediums for presentation.

This summer program sponsored by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) is geared towards providing underrepresented students with enrichment and information about becoming doctors. I was one of 80 students accepted into the program, and one of 40 students participating on the Medical track. During this program, I took classes in Anatomy & Physiology, Statistics, Narrative Medicine, and Nutritional and Health Disparities. As part of this position, my duties require using patient data and relationships with physicians and school nurses to screen and refer patients to evidence-based asthma programs for low-income families. These programs are implemented in school and home settings and include home-health visiting and education, curriculum creation for asthma day education in Providence public schools, facilitation, and co-facilitation of weekly parent and child asthma education classes and focus groups, and observational work and interviews. Future duties of the position will include patient communication, data analysis, research briefs, and others.

As a mentor for Brown's pre-orientation program for underrepresented students in STEM, I created, evaluated, and graded student assignments geared toward preparing students for scientific rigor. This position allowed me to exercise science curriculum accessibility by teaching about fixed and growth mindsets, bloom's taxonomy of learning, study sessions, communication with faculty, and many other parts of the hidden curriculum. I was given my own cohort of pre-medical students, and I mentored them on these topics throughout the program and the school year. By providing my experiences and insight, I was an active part in furthering accessibility for minorities in medicine. This position has led me to consider furthering this work with an analysis of medical education and the experiences minorities in medicine face.

As a research assistant to Brown's Task Force on Anti-Black Racism, I examined the presence of anti-racist pedagogy and assignments in the core courses of Brown's most popular majors. This position required me to compile and quantitatively code course syllabi based on themes of anti-racist practice, black subjectivity, and black agency and activism. Additionally, I analyzed the language of course diversity statements. The culmination of this position was a research brief and data that were used to advocate for increased anti-racist praxis in the most popular concentrations at Brown University. These recommendations were presented to Brown University President Christina Paxson. This position was my first hands-on experience with antiracist education and analyses of current models of higher education. I hope to continue this work and tailor it to learning more about how medical education embodies similar aspects.
