As a Student Engagement Coordinator at Gonzaga University, my job is to develop sustainability-oriented programing for GU's students, faculty, and staff. To do so, I have led the organization of a series of lectures called "Ground Truthing the Climate Crisis". These talks aim to make the issue of climate change more tangible by inviting professionals in the Inland Northwest to speak about how Spokane's climate might be impacted by rising global temperatures in the coming years. I am also the organizer of Spokane's chapter of Green Drinks, an informal bimonthly meeting in which students interested in environmental action meet professionals from Spokane's sustainability field to have a conversation about the environment and make new connections. In this role, I am gaining experience organizing the logistics of holding a public forum, learning how to effectively advertise our event to a student body, and making connections with leaders in sustainability across the Inland Northwest.

I manage Gonzaga's Campus Garden, a position that requires me to both get my hands dirty maintaining crops and plan for contingencies months in advance. I acquired this role after doing similar work as a Food Security Fellow in 2021.Our produce goes to the Gonzaga community for free, and is used to feed people who may have a lack of local, fresh vegetables in their diet. In the Fall of 2021, we harvested more than 400 pounds of produce that went to 468 students.

Each week, myself and one other Food Security Fellow prepared and distributed food throughout Northeast Spokane, a community adjacent to Gonzaga University and disproportionately affected by food insecurity. We distributed both hot meals and shelf stable food and utilized food we recovered from local grocery stores or grew ourselves in GU's community garden. We estimate that we distributed more than 6,000 meals worth of food over the course of the summer. We also managed Gonzaga's Community Garden. We researched, planted and maintained a garden that produced food we used in making our meals, ensuring that the people we helped to feed had access to fresh, local produce in their diet.
