Caleb Hughes, Ph.D. Email and Phone Number
Hi, I’m Caleb, a Physicist looking to make a positive impact on the world.I am completing my doctoral degree at Indiana University applying ferrimagnets in beyond-the-standard-model and nuclear experiments at the Center for Exploration of Energy and Matter. Additionally, I completed my undergraduate degree at Murray State University where I studied millisecond pulsars. In my spare time I enjoy running for exercise and to disconnect, being outdoors with my wife, Han, relaxing indoors with film/tv, and planning travel (domestic and abroad). I also coach and coordinate for my local high school's academic teams, an activity I began my involvement in as a child and now have the pleasure to continue as a mentor. I love tackling large problems and relish the moment when all of the planning involved comes to fruition.Feel free to contact me anytime at cdbrighthughes@gmail.com or hughescd@iu.edu.Primary skills: project management, equipment maintenance, flexibility.Academic expertise: statistics, mathematics, experimental physics, chemistry.

Graduate Associate InstructorIndiana University Bloomington Aug 2016 - Dec 2017Bloomington, Indiana, United StatesAs an associate instructor, I was responsible for either non-class instruction during either a lab or a recitation. For lab courses, I was responsible for understanding how the lab worked, giving a brief explanation of the core concept to the students, supervising their work, then grading the lab reports and providing feedback to encourage academic growth. One of the largest takeaways for students from the lab was error propagation, so I made sure to discuss this in a variety of ways (with examples) so that the students would have mastered the idea by the end of the semester. For recitation sections, I selected homework problems to incentivize attendance and used these problems to explain key concepts and equations. I was also responsible for writing weekly quizzes, so I would often use an existing problem as a reference, then write an interesting narrative around the question to improve engagement. -
Academic CoordinatorMsd Martinsville Aug 2022 - PresentMartinsville, Indiana, United StatesI am responsible for the four competitive academic teams at Martinsville High School, including registration, managing the funds for the teams, fundraising, competition registration, community outreach on behalf of the teams, talent scouting, and expansion of the programs. -
Academic CoachMsd Martinsville Jan 2021 - PresentMartinsville, Indiana, United StatesI coach advanced high school students in Academic Decathlon, Academic Super Bowl, and Academic Quiz Bowl competitions with an emphasis on math and science. -
ResearcherMurray State University Aug 2014 - Sep 2015I was responsible for manually analyzing many MATLAB-generated graphs of radio signal data from the Small Magellanic Clouds in search of millisecond pulsars. I cross-referenced generated graphs with graphs of well-known pulsars in an attempt to discover previously unknown pulsars by analyzing the signal frequency and structure of the amplitudes. Research successfully recovered several known pulsars and confirmed no additional currently detectable millisecond pulsars in the Small Magellanic Clouds. -
Summer Research StudentWilliam & Mary Jun 2015 - Aug 2015During a summer Research Experience for Undergraduates, I was responsible for developing a project in collaboration with a faculty member, and former NASA scientist, at the College of William & Mary. I determined material constraints for a porous substrate supporting a thin film for use in a competing oxygen production system to that being used in the Mars 2020 Rover. I calculated a limiting pore diameter for the porous substructure using a spherical pressure vessel model. Additionally, I determined the most feasible material for the project based on porosity concerns and compatibility with the thermal expansion of the steel tubing which housed the thin film and substructure. After completing initial calculations, I was responsible for obtaining quotes from a variety of vendors for the custom parts by communicating our design constraints. This work resulted in a poster presented at three conferences, one of which was awarded first place.
