Research Assistant (Parkinson’s Disease), October 2010 - May 2011• Studied the role of inflammatory activation of glial cells in neurodegeneration. It was shown that increased inflammation damages neurons and aids in the progression of many neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson’s.• Collected data by running mice that were injected with MPTP, a synthetic drug that produces Parkinson’s in humans, along with mice that were given chemicals that may have a slowing or reversible effect of these symptoms.• Aided in the sedation, draining, and dissection of the mice. Used a cryostat-sectioning machine to closely look at glial cells, astrocytes, and other neuronal pathways throughout the brain, in particular the thalamus, hippocampus, and basal ganglia.Research Assistant (Neurophysiology of Binge Drinking), May 2009 – October 2011• Studied cognitive processes including working memory and temporal processing using neuropsychological measures and electrophysiological indices• Used data I collected through event-related potentials or ERPs by using electroencephalography (EEG) a procedure where electrodes are placed on the scalp.• Connected patients to an EEG machine, ran EEG, collected ERP data, and entered data into a spread sheet along with other computer programs in order to further study the effects binge drinking has on the brains neurophysiology.
