During my last years at UMBC I was part of the University of Biology and Mathematics (UBM), a NSF funded initiative to provide undergraduates an opportunity to integrate mathematical and biological research. As a mathematician, I worked with computational biologists on a project that modeled the evolution of Gene Regulation Networks. This project required extensive use of statistical and mathematical computation methods including genetic algorithms, principle component analysis, motif discovery, ordinary differential equation integration, and stochastic simulation. This project also required advanced knowledge of scientific programming languages such as Python and R. I presented my work at UMBC's Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement Day (URCAD) and the University of Virginia's South East Proceedings on Ecology and Evolutionary Genetics (SEPEEG). As an actuarial intern in the valuation department, I carried out claims studies for several Transamerica products. These claims studies used statistical inference and actuarial science to determine how much the company should put into a reserve account to ensure that claims for the following year could be paid. A number of the products I dealt with were from markets in Japan, which required manipulating input data with Microsoft Access and Excel into formats that were compatible with the actuarial software platform AXIS. In addition to my work in valuation, I spoke frequently with actuaries in other departments, such as modeling, in order to understand actuarial work in general.
