I am seasoned plumber and gas fitter with a 20 year foundation of leadership experience that began at the age of 21, as a fourth year apprentice, when I was promoted to a lead hand – driving a crew of 15 workers – on a 33 storey condo in the heart of Vancouver, Canada. At 25 years old, while working in Edinburgh, Scotland, I was promoted to foreman on a project that was severely behind schedule. I was placed in charge of approximately 30 (older) Scottish tradesmen, with the objective to make up for three months of lost work in one months’ time. Being a young Canadian in a foreign country, they made it intentionally tough on me; but I persevered and we managed to pull it off and get the job completed on time. While my career progressed with the same company, I was sent to various areas in the UK and Ireland to run different projects, from schools to hotels to banks and offices. When I started my career in the oil sands in 2011, my hard work and dedication was quickly rewarded with promotion to nightshift foreman, then to general foreman. This has been a pattern throughout my career that I believe results from these values: - I am a natural motivator who believe in an honest day’s work. I lead by example and I wouldn’t expect any one of my crew to do what I wouldn’t do. I am happy to jump in the trenches to do what it takes to get the job done.- I am focused, resourceful, and am quick to respond when it comes to solving problems. - Working relationships are very important to me, and I understand team dynamics and the importance of building trust and respect with all levels of staff, management and stakeholders.- Safety is number one. I take it upon myself to speak up in safety meetings and put processes into place, believing that with awareness, training, accountability and leadership, we can eliminate incidents.
