About Cal Faubel

Driven Bachelor of Environmental Science (Marine Biology) Honours graduate, currently employed as a Marine Science Graduate at the Australian Institute of Marine Science. Current research includes: Assessing the role that seaweed plays in blue carbon sequestration; Assessing the benefit of land to sea nutrient transfer from bird guano to marine systems; Long term monitoring of fish populations along the Ningaloo reef Western Australia; Quantifying the biosecurity risk of marine pests using network analysis across New Zealand and using network analysis to assess coral larval connectivity on Scott Reef, Western Australia. Recently completed an honours project in the Marine Spatial Ecology and Conservation Lab, led by Eric Treml (Supervisor). My thesis quantified the network dynamics and biosecurity risk of marine vessels on the spread of marine pests in New Zealand. This project is part of a major New Zealand research effort that aims to better protect New Zealand against the threats of marine pests called the Marine Biosecurity Toolbox. During my course and subsequent work at AIMS I have attained skills such as ArcGIS spatial analysis techniques, R coding including network analysis and management of large long term datasets, and report writing. I have attained extensive experience in various field techniques through my studies and fieldwork opportunities at AIMS along with SSI Divemaster qualification with over 200 dives. I have a strong passion for holistic reef restoration, blue carbon sequestration, and marine network analysis.
