Cal's articles for the men's magazine about personal journeys included training for six months and then heading off to Mexico to step in the ring with world boxing champion Julio Cesar Chavez when Julio was 87-0 with 75 knockouts. Julio's entourage asked Cal's wife if Cal had life insurance. Somehow, Cal survived to tell the story.

Cal spent a decade traveling around the globe with very little money, meeting people on trains and buses who often invited him to see their homes and meet their families and friends, who then passed Cal on to their friends and connections. This is the time period where Cal's curiosity about people began to morph into a style of conversation that would have.

Cal grew up reading three newspapers every day and one of his dreams as a kid was to write a column for a big city paper. His first job out of college was with the Miami Herald, where he wrote features for a year before being asked by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch to join its sports staff. That's where Cal fulfilled his childhood dream.
