About Calla Williams

I am an undergraduate student at the University of Michigan pursuing a Bachelor of Science in the School of Public Health, a minor in Biology in the School of Literature Science and Art, and a minor in Community Action and Social Change in the School of Social Work. In addition to my interests in the health sciences, I also have a passion for furthering health equity and social justice. I aspire to pursue a JD/MPH dual degree to advance towards a career in health law. Fueled by my education and passion, I will work to create a more equitable health care system through revisions and additions to health policies. While I am pursuing multiple degrees in various fields to prepare me to achieve these goals in the future, I work to make an impact in the present as well. I am a consistent and long time volunteer at the Washtenaw Homeless Shelter, conduct whole health research at the Ann Arbor Veterans Association clinic alongside Dr. Nikhil Parekh, and serve as the Vice President of Belonging, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion for my sorority. Immediately after being elected BEDI Chairwoman of my chapter, I began to advocate for the elevation of the position and an installation of a DEI department. 2 months into my term I successfully convinced our executive board, advisors, and collegians to permanently install the position as an executive officer for the first time in chapter history - so I now serve as the Vice President of DEI for Gamma Phi Beta at Michigan. As VP DEI, I lead a department of 5 officers and a committee of 30+ members to implement DEI initiatives, plan meaningful and relevant events with outside organizations, and assist with recruitment processes for the sorority. I strive to create a welcoming and inclusive environment for all sisters, and to foster a culture of learning and respect.During my time on the pre-medical track I gained multiple years of clinical experience. Most recently I shadowed Attending Urologist Dr. Emilie Johnson at Lurie Children’s Hospital and worked as clinical staff at an oral and maxillofacial surgical center on Chicago’s north shore during summer 2024. Through these experiences I gained a better understanding of the how the U.S. health care system differently affects people of contrasting socioeconomic backgrounds through a multitude of factors. I am eager to discover the vast array of opportunities that value diversity, equity, and inclusion, and that offers opportunities for growth and learning in the healthcare field.
