In this internship I used various energy modeling softwares to predict building energy use. I analyzed model results and detected deficiencies in design with the goal of improving building efficiency. I made suggestions to clients on how to improve their design and kept an open line of communication with them to ensure the best outcome. This experience built on my past experience as a design intern and gave me a more in depth understanding of the built environment. It urged me to consider the impacts of the systems I designed in the past and to use a more analytical mindset.

In my industry-sponsored capstone project, I used computational fluid dynamics to determine the viability a single-module after-treatment system for Diesel engines. My team’s analysis considered exhaust flow and heat transfer within the system and worked to efficiently utilize heat from the exhaust. By developing a design utilizing fin structures, we were able to effectively transfer heat from one component of the system to another while maintaining low pressure drop. This improved the efficiency and proved the viability of the single-module after-treatment system. This experience sharpened my collaboration and communication skills, as well as time-management and organization skills. It gave me valuable experience beginning a project at a theoretical basis and developing it using complex engineering tools. This project was honored with the “2019 Outstanding Design Award” by the UW Mechanical Engineering Department.

In this internship I assisted in the design of plumbing and HVAC systems in mixed-occupancy buildings, fire stations and community centers. I calculated building heat and plumbing loads and sized and designed subsequent systems.
