Technical Authority Engineer

Nuclear Applications Scientist

Sedgefield, England, United Kingdom

Kromek Group designs, develops, manufactures, and markets both hardware and software of CZT solid-state Radiation Detectors and Scintillation Radiation Detector components and products to OEM, Civil Nuclear, Security Sectors, and Government Bodies across the globe. My role as a nuclear application scientist is to aid in the development of new detectors and improve existing products.

Industrial Placement

Gloucestershire, England, United Kingdom

An industrial student role in the Radiological Consequences team at EDF UK for a year in industry placement as part of my BSc in physics. It was an amazing time of my life to learn vast knowledge of the inner workings of the nuclear industry in the UK, from business to the atomic sciences. With my industrial tutor Tasos Zodiates and a small team, I worked alongside the fuel engineers and reactor physicists to extend the life of the Sizewell B nuclear plant by re-evaluating the risks of a nuclear accident. I was tasked with re-evaluating the Auxilliary building accident risk using probability charts, EXCEL with VBA coding and data inferencing from years of documentation. In the end, Tasos and I completed my task, fully publishing a report to state that due to a more accurate re-evaluation using up-to-date calculation methods with the help of modern technology, it is likely that the Sizewell B nuclear plant can operate for many more years to come. It was a fantastic opportunity to contribute to the extension of the plant, and overall battling of climate change by allowing efficient and renewable technologies to operate for longer, and be more cost-effective for the UK. During my time at EDF, I met many friends and colleagues to learn from, even leading a small outreach organisation of a large portion of the present industrial placement students to communicate and share knowledge of our experiences remotely during the COVID-19 pandemic. The knowledge I gained has now aligned me to pursue an engineering role in reactor physics as I grew a large interest in nuclear physics in university and nuclear engineering in my time working with reactor physicists in my placement .For the university module of my placement year, I achieved an 89% grade on my final report (attached to this thread) and a great affinity to work in the nuclear/renewable industry for my career.

Nuffield Placement Intern

Bath, England, United Kingdom

A summer placement at Bath University Mechanical Engineering working on an experimental underwater remotely operated vehicle for SONAR research anf development as a part of a PhD student's thesis. I worked with other PhD students and the project supervisor, Dr Alan Hunter. In the early stages, I was instructed to build, test and operate the drone using coding with drone software and a videogame console controller. I later developed key skills in Autodesk Inventor to 3D print parts and collaborate with the PhD thesis to contruct attatchements which would mount SONAR instruments to the chassis of the drone. The ojective of my position was to ensure the drone was able to properly operate with large instruments attatched to it's chassis to perform the experiments needed for the PhD student. This is the Nuffield Research project placement that I undertook in the summer of 2017 which then allowed me to compete in the National BigBangFair of 2018. I was able to present and defend the project with dedicated booth, allowing me to win the Gold CREST Award and participation in both the Nuffield Research Project and the BigBang Competitor medal.
