When I returned to Solargain, I had the opportunity to choose my preferred department, so I jumped at the chance to get hands-on with solar installs and gain some solid field experience. I’ve since worked with top-tier inverters like Fronius, SolarEdge, Enphase, and SMA, as well as battery systems from Tesla, LG Chem, and BYD. Installing these setups with a range of solar panels really gave me a feel for the ins and outs of residential and commercial solar, letting me hone my skills across different brands and systems.Being back on the tools was a real highlight. I handled everything from diagnosing faults and running firmware updates to doing full-scale system upgrades and repairs. There’s nothing like the satisfaction of getting a system back up and running or optimising it for peak performance—it’s where all that technical know-how meets real-world results.As the Installation Manager, I was responsible for overseeing the installation teams, ensuring they had the appropriate stock on hand, all in excellent condition and ready for each project. My focus was on achieving a seamless installation process, so I maintained strict oversight on materials, verifying that every item required was accurately prepared and organized. Additionally, I collaborated closely with the sales representatives to review designs, ensuring that all necessary elements and contingencies were accounted for, thereby preventing any unexpected issues during execution.I also supervised the warehouse team, reinforcing adherence to protocols and ensuring that all items were prepared and packed according to specific schedules. Working alongside the sales team, I provided support in pricing systems accurately, balancing competitiveness with comprehensive coverage. By streamlining processes from initial quote to final installation, I helped maintain efficiency and consistency across every phase of the project.

During the beginning of the pandemic, Running the branch at CNG Systems meant taking charge of the dollars and cents, managing cash flow, and keeping the books balanced with monthly invoicing and final account settlements. I was across coordinating our teams, making sure materials were ordered and delivered on time, and handling pricing variations as they came up. With a lineup of clients, multiple sites, and a solid team of sparky staff under my watch, I had to keep all the cogs turning smoothly.Unfortunately, COVID-19 threw a spanner in the works, and a few projects got canned as a result. Despite the setbacks, I kept things ticking over by tightening up resources, refining team schedules, and making sure we were ready to bounce back once the industry picked up again. It was a test of adaptability, but it sharpened my project and financial management skills across the board.It was a pleasure working for this company, albeit for a short duration.

Having left ICR Electrical for an opportunity to be the General Manager of an MEP business certainly meant new challenges.As the Project Management Office (PMO) lead, I managed multiple projects following PMBOK standards, which enhanced project control and efficiency. Through strategic restructuring of operations, I improved processes and reduced workforce requirements by 15%, resulting in annual savings of over $300,000. To streamline logistics, I established comprehensive procedures for tracking equipment from ordering through to delivery. This involved redesigning the warehouse setup, restructuring the logistics team, and implementing an ERP system to ensure timely, safe handling and arrival of all materials and equipment.I rolled out new procurement, quality control, and site control policies, providing training at every level to elevate installation quality and documentation standards. With oversight for a team of 20 expatriates, I improved job role clarity, KPI accuracy, and performance management processes, creating clear lines of accountability across mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and ELV teams. I also initiated the ISO 9001:2017 accreditation process to further standardize quality.One key achievement was project management of a $13M Tier III-certified data centre, the first of its kind in West Africa. I coordinated site supervisors and engineering teams to uphold international quality standards and led integrated testing of all systems, including chilled water, BMS, generators, UPS, and utility connections. By leveraging MS Project and custom Excel VBA programs, I closely monitored the project schedule, managed equipment arrivals, and optimized staffing levels to prevent any potential construction delays.

In my role as Branch Manager, I oversaw all financial aspects and managed a team of 60 staff across various roles. I led the estimating and procurement department, achieving an impressive 80% tender success rate. Building and maintaining strong client relationships was a priority, allowing us to retain existing clients and generate new business opportunities.I implemented systems for quality assurance, time management, cash flow management, project scheduling, and procurement planning to enhance operational efficiency. My team successfully delivered a range of large-scale projects, including a $2.4M data centre installation for Vodacom featuring generators, transformers, cabling, UPS systems, and lighting; a $4.2M electrical installation for a 45,000m² shopping mall; and a $2.4M Tier III data centre for Eskom with full MEP services.

I managed procurement, resource planning, and weekly coordination with clients, consultants, and the main contractor to ensure projects were delivered on time and aligned with all stakeholder expectations. My role included final account sign-off, ensuring all costs were tracked and controlled, and confirming that project margins exceeded initial estimates.Key projects included:• Civitas, Pretoria: Oversaw a comprehensive electrical installation for a high-rise refurbishment, which involved sourcing and managing materials, power skirting, light fittings, generators, and water pump panels for an $8.4M project.• Holiday Inn, Woodmead: Led the electrical work for South Africa’s first Holiday Inn Express and two subsequent sites, supervising five subcontractors and around 65 personnel, with a project value of $680K.• Crowne Plaza, Rosebank: Managed the refurbishment of the Rosebank hotel. When the project engineer departed mid-project, I stepped in to manage relationships and maintain progress to ensure successful completion ($1.86M).• Northern Cape Prison, Kimberley: Directed the electrical work for this large-scale correctional facility build, valued at $8.6M.

Working for Clint Deyzel as the Contract Manager for a department called small works exposed us to many types of installations, we did many projects from multi million rand town houses, to shops, to computer lab, offices and casinos, our contract manager showed the greatest of project management skills when dealing with the 3 supervisors he initially had under his control.I oversaw a diverse range of projects, from small residential alterations to large-scale office renovations. Notable achievements include:• The Cradle of Humankind: Completed the full installation post-construction of the exhibition centre and Sterkfontein Caves, valued at $200,000.• Hyde Park: Managed a Clipsal fully automated installation, with a project value of $500,000.• Alberton: Executed the complete installation for the new SARS head office, amounting to $1.5 million.• South Wales, UK: Led the refurbishment of a crusher plant, involving relocation from England to Wales and rebuilding to meet client specifications, with a total investment of $3 million.I personally supervised the below listed projects:•UJ – R3M – New computer lab building from foundation to completion.•Alberton – R15.6M – New tax department head office, complete installation, from the 11kv transformer, Rmu, lv boards lighting etc.•Johannesburg – R2.63M – Refurbishment of old building for a new contact centre for standard bank.
