About Calvin D. Sun, Md

Calvin D. Sun, MD is a board-certified Emergency Medicine physician, clinical assistant professor, author, speaker, activist, choreographer, filmmaker, and entrepreneur based in NYC.Dr. Sun graduated from Columbia University and SUNY Downstate College of Medicine, serving as Vice President and President of his classes, respectively. He was a host on MTVu’s show The Freshmen from 2004-2008 and is an award-winning independent filmmaker. Known for his films on Asian American stereotypes and female body image, his work on the latter won the inaugural One to Watch Award at the 2007 Asian American International Film Festival. His contributions to Asian American body image research have appeared in numerous articles and books, including The American Beauty Industry Encyclopedia.Following his graduation, Dr. Sun led the Columbia College Young Alumni, overseeing the largest growth period in its 12-year history. He also served as Director of the East Coast Asian American Student Union (ECAASU), the nation’s oldest and largest ethnic-interest collegiate organization, where he became the longest-serving member in its 40-year history.As the founder of The Monsoon Diaries, Dr. Sun transformed his solo travel blog, started the summer before medical school, into an accidental adventure travel company and global community that has taken thousands to 190+ countries over the past 12 years. The Monsoon Diaries has been featured on BBC, ABC, Huffington Post, MSNBC, TED, National Geographic, and USA Today, and recently inspired a memoir of the same name published by HarperCollins. Dr. Sun continues to travel monthly to new destinations, inviting anyone who wants to join.Dr. Sun completed his Emergency Medicine training at Jacobi+Montefiore Medical Center, where he also served as the Director of Resident Wellness. Since 2018, he has served as the lead physician and Chief Medical Officer at the NYC Marathon’s finish line, and he currently practices at various locations and events around the city.During the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Sun provided critical firsthand reporting from NYC emergency rooms, experiences that are captured in his memoir The Monsoon Diaries.
