I advised Prof. Carole Turley Voulgaris and a group of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo researchers on the survey design and quantitative analysis of a new Cal Poly campus travel survey. Specific aims included using secondary data and big data to improve estimates of campus travel as well as the evaluation of the travel impacts of new campus housing and parking policies.

Read scientific literature and performed statistical and graphical analyses using the scripting language R.

With Dan Morley and OPM staff, developed the 2013-2018 State Conservation and Development Policies Plan, which included collecting and analyzing data, mapping, participating in outreach meetings, and designing performance indicators. Implemented the current plan through monthly reviews of the bond commission's conformity to the state's locational map, and aided in the rollout of a transit-oriented development pilot project.

Investigated the impact of a new shopping center on consumer preferences, mode of travel, and travel distance for Davis residents. Performed GIS analysis of data: geocoded addresses and calculated trip distances for further statistical analysis.

Learned the processes and techniques of math modeling in biology with a team of six other undergraduates, culminating in a summer project of our own creation and design studying invasive Argentine ants. Beyond learning to read scientific papers, write R scripts to model ant behavior and colony dynamics, and work in a team, learned the value of consistently revisiting main questions as the key to clear thinking and effective research.
