As Director of Research and Development at the Center for Applied Research in Dementia my major focus is on translation of research into practice. At the Center we conduct research on development and refinement of interventions for persons with cognitive disabilities, focusing most of our work on persons with dementia. We then translate these findings into trainings for both professional and lay caregivers. Our approach is person-centered, emphasizing the values of respect, dignity, and equality espoused by Maria Montessori. We translate her values and methods (based on rehabilitation principles and techniques) into practice with adult populations. We also create and train methods for enabling persons with dementia and other cognitive disabilities to learn new information, skills, and social roles.
