2023 Spaceport America Cup 10K COTS:• Design and modeling of three iterations of a rocket airbrake module for the University of Virginia’s first entry in the Spaceport America Cup 10K within the COTS division.• Conducted Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations in SolidWorks to evaluate the final airbrake module, identifying potential risks to the rocket’s structural integrity.

• Created preliminary mechanical designs of robot sensor localization gantry to early construction of final CoreXY system.• Performed CoreXY motor testing and electronics development using Arduino IDE and Teensy microcontroller.• Completed fidelity testing of two OTS water sensors using Arduino IDE and Teensy to determine effectiveness in robot.• Modeled and 3D-printed water sensors to be placed in various components of robot using Onshape.• Designed and constructed water nozzle force testing rig using Onshape to determine if nozzle force interferes with robot functionality.• Tested two nozzles at 11 different pressures using testing rig and presented findings to lead engineers.• Created six iterations of proprietary scale model robot deployment and recovery system and presented final concept to company leadership which determined to move forward with the design.
