My experience in the Early Years Sector dates back to 2017. My experiences within Early Years have been unique. As a man in Early Years, just 3% of the national workforce in the UK, I have encountered a number of situations, attitudes and values that have viewed my gender as the whole of my identity. "It's strange a man wants to work with toddlers", "I don't want him changing my child" and "Yes, but what does he do?" are all comments I have experienced, along with a variety of concerned looks. Through Beech Tree Childcare, I have been supported throughout my time with them. Additionally, Beech Tree Childcare’s involvement within the local community gave me the opportunity to talk at The Angmering School. I have attended classrooms, career days and assemblies speaking to up to two hundred students about the benefits of apprenticeships. Additionally, this has allowed me to shape the public perception of not just Early Years, but that of men within this sector. Additionally, I have been able to conduct a professional tour of Early Years settings within the UK (https://www.bestpracticetour.com/blog). The overall aim of the Best Practice Tour was to explore and begin to understand the many ways in which education in the early years is put into practice. From the tip of Cornwall to the Inner Hebrides, I’ve schmoozed, spoken to, and worked with other educators each from their own unique setting, their ideas of best practice influenced by distinctive personal and professional experiences. this experience reinforced the idea that approaches to education in the early years aren’t prescriptive, with a one size fits all method that all settings can put into practice. Each settings approach to practice have been formed through their understanding of the legislation, Early Years Statutory Framework (EYFS, DfE, 2021) for England and the Realising the Ambition: Being Me (RtA, Education Scotland, 2020) for Scotland, through the lens of their pedagogy and ethos. Beyond that each setting’s pedagogy and ethos has been shaped by the location, the educator’s values and the unique children who have attended in the past. All these variables ensure that there is no one approach to education that will benefit all children without leaving those most vulnerable without the support they need.

Training ManagerBeech Tree Childcare Ltd May 2017 - PresentAngmering, England, United KingdomMy initial role within Beech Tree Childcare was that of a Level 3 apprentice. Since 2017, I have gained experience, knowledge and confidence within the sector. Taking the opportunities provided to me by Beech Tree Childcare. At the beginning of 2019, I was given the opportunity to manage a team of educators. Working with them to create an enabling environment for the children within our care. I was responsible for ensuring that their own professional development continued to grow. This led naturally into my next role. When I started at University I had to take a step back from the full-time responsibility of being a Team Lead. My commitments to my own education led to me taking on a mentor role within the business. I created training for my colleagues, using my experience as learning opportunities for the educators. Beech Tree follows the Early Years Statutory Framework (2021) through ‘in the moment planning’ and ‘teachable moments’.In January 2022, I returned to working full time at Beech Tree Childcare. Returning to a management role within the business. In the time since returning from my studies, I have worked with my team and management to create the highest quality education for the children within our care. I created and run a programme for school aged children during the school holidays, leading my Scallywags (https://www.beechtreechildcare.co.uk/about-us/parent-partnership/scallywags-holiday-club/) in risky play that encourages them to push their limits, building resilience, confidence and independence. At Beech Tree Childcare we have always maintained that management and educators working in unison, with a clear understanding of responsibilities and goals is essential to quality early years education. Ofsted's focus on efficient, effective leadership has reinforced this. As we take steps to support our educators mental health, continuous professional development and understanding of their practice. -
Public Speaking And LecturingBeech Tree Childcare Ltd May 2017 - PresentWest Sussex, England, United KingdomThroughout my time with Beech Tree Childcare, I have regularly taken part in and led public speaking events. Speaking to students of several local schools and educational institutions about the realities of operating within the Early Years Sector and the many professional routes these students could take. Often these talks would question the children's previous notions of the Early Years Sector and confront many of the stereotypes that surround the Sector. -
