Hi, my name is Cameron Hubbard and I am a graduate of St. Olaf College. I am driven to continue in the social work profession because I want to create equitable and inclusive services and promote social change for historically marginalized and underserved communities. To pursue this goal, I plan to continue my education by getting my MSW degree and eventually obtaining a Masters in Advanced Generalist Social Work. This profession requires active listening skills, the ability to navigate micro and macro level systems, alternative advocacy skills, alternative approaches to client-specific interventions, and work with a diverse client population. My past experiences at Youth Villages, Community Action Center, and St. Olaf College have given me insight and the necessary skills to apply to this profession.In addition to my social work career, I aspire to create a non-profit organization centered around the arts for youth. This organization would provide opportunities for youth to create healthy relationships with the arts and their peers within an arts medium. It would also support up-and-coming artists and provide a platform for artists to showcase their work. My experience with student organizations at St. Olaf College has allowed me to produce shows that give students a platform to showcase their talents and work.Lastly, I have a dream of opening a record store that also has a coffee shop. This space would allow me to create a safe and inclusive environment for underrepresented identities and communities that have been marginalized, harmed, and/or discriminated against. My experience in the Student Government Association at St. Olaf College has provided me with opportunities to utilize active listening, advocacy, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. Additionally, I have been able to identify, call out, and work to change racist and oppressive structures.
