Ninety-five percent of British Columbia, including Vancouver, is on unceded traditional First Nations territory. Unceded means that First Nations people never ceded or legally signed away their lands to the Crown or to Canada. A traditional territory is the geographic area identified by a First Nation as the land they and/or their ancestors traditionally occupied and used.Today, there are approximately 200,000 Indigenous people in British Columbia. They include First Nations, Inuit and Métis. The 198 distinct First Nations in B.C. each have their own unique traditions and history. More than 30 different First Nation languages and close to 60 dialects are spoken in the province.Understanding the importance of community connections to culture and history has been a starting place for the ventures that have crossed my path and career. From leading community boards and administering resources through a consensus-based model, the importance of guidance from Elders and community have shaped who I have become.
