The technique allows for many of the noise amplifying processes of conventional force estimation techniques to be avoided, allowing for increased accuracy in sub-optimal data sets.• Continuing the research of my MASc degree at Queen's, I worked to develop another new algorithm to non-intrusively measure instantaneous loads and forces acting on accelerating bodies but with enhanced experimental simplicity. • The unsteady force estimation method developed within my thesis requires advanced, and often difficult to obtain, time-resolved three-dimensional flow data. The objective of this research was to employ clever fluid mechanics principles that would allow a less sophisticated, two-dimensional measurement system to be used, in place of the advanced three-dimensional technique, with minimal loss of accuracy in the force estimate.
