About Cameron Nugent

Hello I am Cam Nugent, a Senior Computational Biologist at Sequence Bio. I work as a member of the Data Science and Analytics team where I conduct bioinformatics research and implement findings in the development and deployment of production-level data analysis pipelines.Through application of bioinformatics techniques such as whole genome sequencing, variant calling, imputation, GWAS, etc., our team is helping to characterize the genetic basis of rare human diseases in the population of Newfoundland. My day to day work involves data science research and software development mainly via Python, R, and bash. Building bioinformatics systems that are transparent, robust, reusable, and scientifically reproducible is of the upmost importance. I prioritize use of the Snakemake workflow management system, for reproducible and scalable data analyses, and Git for version control and software development project management to ensure that research results and software produced are of the highest standard.Cam Nugent | Senior Computational Biologist at Sequence BioGitHub Page: https://github.com/CNuge

Postdoctoral Researcher

Guelph, Ontario

  • Machine Learning: Designed an alignment-free taxonomic classifier for DNA sequence data (Python). The program uses a custom Python class to extract features from DNA sequence fragments of unidentified origin and assign.
  • Statistics and Software Design: Developed novel R software packages that utilize profile hidden Markov models to classify and correct errors in high throughput DNA sequence data. These packages, coil and debar have.
  • Communication and Teaching: Authored scientific publications to communicate research findings to a wide audience. Lead tutorials where I teach programming and statistics techniques to graduate students and faculty.
May 2019 - Jul 2020

Phd Candidate

Guelph, Ontario

  • Bioinformatics and Data Science: Created and utilized custom Python, R, and Go programs, mySQL queries, and shell scripts in cloud computing environments to conduct bioinformatics research on the Arctic charr genome..
  • Statistics: Used linear mixed effects models and additional statistical methods to conduct genome wide association studies and determine the genetic basis of length and weight in farmed Arctic charr populations.
  • Use of supervised machine learning algorithms to predict the weight and length of Arctic charr based on thousands of genetic variants.
  • Communication of findings to colleagues and the public through scientific publications and conference presentations.
