As an undergraduate studying neuroscience and philosophy, I was constantly surprised by how difficult it was to find spaces bridging the gap between ‘hard’ and ‘soft’ sciences. In an age of hyper-specialization, it seemed, there were paths to study the brain and paths to study the mind, but few ways to walk between the two. Yet I firmly believed, and still believe, that as our scientific acumen advances, it is imperative that our moral accountability keeps pace. If we wish to live in a world where innovation is just, equitable, and wise, we cannot remain in our silos – whether they be sectoral, geographic, or socio-economic – ignoring the broader ramifications of our actions.During my time as a Bass Connections Fellow at Duke University’s Bioethics and Science Policy program, I found a space where I could bridge those gaps; I worked with a multidisciplinary team to address the ethical, social, and legal issues arising from technologies such as gene-editing tools and brain-computer interfaces. From there, I put my knowledge into action on the World Economic Forum’s Platform for Shaping the Future of Health & Healthcare. As the Forum's Health Innovation Portfolio Lead, I built a portfolio of multi-stakeholder, collaborative efforts to improve the state of the world and ensure every person has equal access to the highest standards of health and healthcare. Today, I am a Senior Associate at Luminary Labs, a strategy and innovation consultancy. Across our focus areas – scientific discovery, infrastructure, health, and education – we work on thorny problems that matter with visionary clients at global corporations, federal agencies, and nonprofit foundations. We are energized by complex, multi-stakeholder spaces where the solutions are not obvious and the potential for impact is high.
