Natural Resources Analyst
This role serves as a full-time position with the Land Quality Division as a Natural Resource Analyst, which oversees the environmental compliance of over 40 mining operations for sand, gravel, and bentonite across western Wyoming. Common job tasks include reviewing Annual Reports, writing Inspection Reports based on in-field site visits, establishing reclamation liability, the enforcement of laws, rules and regulations, and reviewing mining applications/revisions for new and existing permits. The use of GIS, remote sensing, CAD drawings, and various databases is integral to analyzing environmental impact and determining compliance of mine sites. The ability to communicate professionally in a written/verbal manner required when sending reports, settling disputes, and working with private industries alongside other state, county, federal agencies.
Certified Spray Technician
This role was a seasonal position with the Fremont County Weed and Pest as a Certified Spray Technician. This position's goals were to enhance land use quality across Fremont County through the responsible and timely application of selective herbicides. During this time I earned a Wyoming Commercial Applicator License for restricted use pesticides on right-of-way and rangeland environments. Common tasks included vegetation identification, GPS data collection, prescribed chemical treatment of noxious weeds, equipment calibration, and ORV operation. Towards the end of the season my tasks evolved towards GIS data analysis, GIS database updates, private land owner consultations, and ArcGIS Online story map building for data presentation. I was awarded the 2019 Seasonal Employee of the Year during my time with the Fremont County Weed and Pest.
Undergraduate Student Researcher
This position worked under Dr. Ramesh Sivanpillai as a student researcher focused on water identification and data collection techniques using DOQ and satellite imagery processing in the Powder River Basin. The overall intent was to identify trends/patterns in omissions and commission error using NDWI and MNDWI indices. This position relied heavily on the use of ArcGIS Desktop 10.3 and Erdas Imagine 2015 to generate pseudo ground truth points, gather results for accuracy assessment, and test index threshold tradeoffs with these commonly used water classification indices. A QA/QC protocol was development and implemented to ensure data accuracy and relevancy to the project scope, which was integral to maintaining clean and organized data to analyze and draw results form. Research findings were presented at Undergraduate Research Day at the university, as well as the American Geophysical Union virtual poster showcase.
Undergraduate Intern
This position was a summer intern position under Dr. Paddington Hodza working with ArcGIS Pro's 3D capabilities to expand upon the University of Wyoming campus mapping project. This position required self-guided and online learning alongside the exploration of ArcGIS Pro without any prior use of the software. I worked with several other departments at the university to find ways to effectively implement GIS in a 3D capacity to meet their current needs. The integration of CAD files and CityEngine was used to construct a 3D model of the campus with geospatial properties, alongside the use of LiDAR data to construct new models from remotely sensed data. The ArcGIS JavaScript 4.0 (beta) API was explored to develop a web application using HTML, CSS and JavaScript to integrate 3D GIS to a broader variety of end users. Through this process I also utilized python to create a tool script within ArcGIS Pro to calculate Wi-Fi propagation in a 3D environment. The abstract and a demonstration of this research was presented at the 2015 Western Planners conference in Laramie, WY, the 2015 GIS in the Rockies conference in Denver, CO, and at the 2016 AutoCarto conference in Albuquerque, NM.
