Profile bio

About Cameron Trapp

I recieved my PhD in Physics, focusing on Computational Astrophysics at the University of California, San Diego, working under Dusan Keres in the FIRE collaboration. My research is focused on characterizing how gas is accretes on to galactic disks, where it joins, and how it ultimately fuels star formation in more interior regions of galaxies. The initial work on this topic focused on characterizing the phenomenology of these gas flows, and has branched off into some very interesting directions. I have just finished a study analyzing the torques that drive these gas flows, which required modifying the massively parallel C code Gizmo and rerunning the simulations on a national supercomputer to extract the relevant data. I am currently working on creating synthetic HI emission images based on these simulations. Combined with what we know about the dynamic structure of the gas, I am developing and training Convolutional Neural Networks to be able to infer complicated and difficult to observe gas dynamics in actual observational data.
