About Cameron Sinclair Frsa

With a steadfast commitment to social impact design, my work harnesses sustainable innovation to foster solutions for social and humanitarian challenges. Cameron is currently developing sports for social change programs in both conflict and post-disaster communities. As a consultant, the focus on humanitarian design has guided the development of initiatives like rapidly deployable educational for refugees and post-conflict and disaster reconstruction programs. The skills in creative direction, editorial, and design standards acquired in previous roles as a designer and managing director are instrumental in driving these projects forward. The philosophy of 'Design Like You Give A Damn' has permeated through my approach, inspiring actionable change and empowering communities. This experience compliments my work at Worldchanging Institute, where we strive to impact lives through innovative design and climate adaptation. Since the late 90’s I worked on teams focused on health, education and housing solutions for displaced populations. During that time I co-founded and ran an international post-disaster and climate resiliency non profit organization. This work led to the 2006 TED Prize and development of the Open Architecture Network, the world’s first open source building management software for humanitarian projects. After a number of years managing private family foundations, I lead social innovation at Airbnb. Our team focused on rural revitalization, livelihoods for marginalized communities and housing for displaced families and refugees. This also included working on the inception of Airbnb.orgI am a frequent speaker, writer and advocate for the power of design to make a difference. I teach and mentor on design thinking, humanitarian design and social innovation and have authored/edited books on humanitarian and environmental design.

Listed skills include Sustainability, Sustainable Design, Design Research, Architectural Design, and 27 others.

This fall I return to academia. I will be teaching a graduate seminar on humanitarian architecture and design diplomacy. This course with involve real world situations, with real partners on the ground.Due to climate collapse, man-made and natural disasters, we are seeing a record number of refugees and forced migration. When these crises happen there is often a call for action, and while shelter is vital to rebuild local communities, the industry does not respond. Not only do we not value our skills, our industry does not train it's next generation for the future they will inherit. Fortunately, global practitioners are recognizing the ethical responsibility of the profession and the practice of humanitarian design has emerged over the last few decades. I am truly honored that the University of Buffalo is embarking on this intersection between humanitarian response, ecological resilience and social engagement.
