As a CCT RN, I assume care for and transport critical, unstable and ICU level patients that are in need of medical management that is not available at the originating facility. I am trained in numerous critical care skills and parameters including but not limited to central and arterial line monitoring, invasive hemodynamic monitoring, ventilator initiation and management, IABP, Impella, ECMO monitoring and care, vasoactive drips, sedation, and RSI if necessary, all while constrained to the resources that are available in the back of an ambulance. I am contracted to perform CCT Duties through Symons Ambulance for Liberty, Premier, Med-Coast, and SoCal Ambulance. In addition, I was also employed by AMR with Doctors Ambulance.

In addition to my direct clinical duties, I also work as a base outreach coordinator. As such I work closely with the communities we serve, fire departments, hospitals and other public service agencies to provide medical and air operations training, education, marketing, and overall transparency of the care we provide. I also act as a bridge between the public and Mercy Air operations through in-person contacts, virtual conferences, social media, and events.

As a Flight RN I stabilize, care for and transport critically ill patients that are too unstable to be moved via ground ambulance due to time sensitive illness, trauma, or necessary hospital intervention. As a registered nurse on a highly specialized team that incudes myself and a flight paramedic, I am trained and authorized to perform lifesaving procedures such as RSI, surgical or needle cricothyrotomy, needle decompression, pleural chest tube insertion, and escharotomies. Additionally, as part of my expanded scope, I am expected to initiate ventilator management, care for device dependent patients (such as ECMO, VADs, IABPs and Impellas), transduce invasive monitoring lines, initiate and titrate vasoactive, analgesic and sedative medications, and perform rapid assessments with appropriate treatments on 911 emergency scenes.

Riverside Community Hospital

Contrary to its name, Riverside Community Hospital no longer operates as a small ‘community’ medical center. In fact RCH is a 478 bed level I Trauma teaching hospital, and is the second busiest in the state of California. RCH is also a comprehensive stroke center, STEMI receiving center and accredited transplant center. I chose RCH as the medical center to purse my transition in practice from ER to Intensive Care due to its reputation as a facility that serves a diverse patient population and large number of severe illnesses and injures. I was assigned to the 35 bed SICU/CVICU, which in addition to complex and high acuity illnesses, serves as the trauma and open heart admission unit.
