A four-week field biologist course out in the wild of Zimbabwe. We learned a variety of wildlife monitoring skills such as camera trapping, pitfall traps, radio telemetry tracking, and tracking using prints. We learned many other skills such as habitat mapping using transect samples, GPS and GIS, species identification for both flora and fauna, and how to process camera trap data. We learned many other skills such as habitat mapping using transect samples, GPS and GIS, species identification for both flora and fauna, and how to process camera trap data. Lectures were also given on a range of animal science topics such as darting and collaring, anti-snare methods, and DNA analysis from fecal samples.There was also a community engagement week in which we experienced how the local communities lived alongside the wild animals and what practices they had to protect themselves without creating conflicts with the wildlife, in particular lions and elephants. We also helped plant a pocket forest at a local primary school, took children from the school to an elephant sanctuary, and played in and helped run a tag rugby tournament for two local schools. Language lessons were provided to us to help us integrate better with the local people where possible.We were also given an exercise in small groups to come up with our own community conservation project that we pitched as though we were looking for funding to start the project, with our group choosing to focus on sustainable fuel alternatives and increasing the use of biochar Show less
