As Hydrogen Technical Lead at the MTC, I am leading our internal program of work to develop capability that addresses the manufacturing challenges facing the transition to a Net Zero economy. A major focus of this program is on Hydrogen. This program features multiple technologies and stakeholders across the whole energy value chain. Additionally, I am a Resource Manager and work in a multi-disciplinary team to provide complex multi-faceted solutions.
Advanced Research Engineer; Advanced Materials Processing
My work in the Advanced Materials Processing group was diverse, allowing me to deliver and manage projects (internal, customer funded and collaborative R&D) that focus on the analysis, processing and handling of various materials (projects up to €1M in value). A major focus of my work has been developing processes and performing supply chain assessments for powder metallurgy processes.I presented my work on the assessment of flowability assessments for AM powder feedstock at the AMPM2021 conference.
Research Engineer; Materials Engineering
As an RE, a large focus of my work was with metal powder for use in AM, as the MTC is home to the National Centre for Additive Manufacturing. Projects included powder characterisation analysis and development, supply chain evaluation and down-selection.To aid the development of other powder metallurgy processes, projects included equipment testing and commissioning and new facility commissioning.I presented my work on the development of a methodology for the characterisation of contamination in powder at the EPMA EuroPM 2018 conference.
Graduate Research Engineer
I have completed graduate training at the MTC (Sept.15 – Sept.17) under the scheme as below:- Net Shape Manufacturing (3 months) Worked on research projects developing technologies complementary to HIP processing.- MOE Secondment (3 months) Worked on a Manufacturing Operational Efficiency (MOE) discovery project, where I was part of a team based at a client’s site for 6 weeks. Work culminated in the proposal of unique manufacturing strategies to improve operational efficiency.- Programme Management (6 months)Supported the management of Rolls-Royce-led collaborative programme Manufacturing Portfolio. Typical tasks included management of project finances, progress and risk reviews and supporting new project introduction. Prepared and ran builds for the L-PBF machines at the MTC, including machines manufactured by Renishaw, EOS and Matsuura (L-PBF Hybrid).- Materials Engineering (6 months)
Summer Studentship
The Diamond Light Source synchrotron is one of the world's leading scientific facilities and is the UK's largest scientific investment in over 40 years. Used by over 3000 researchers from academia and industry, the synchrotron is an essential tool for science in the UK. It is situated on the Harwell Science and Innovation Campus in Oxfordshire, sharing facilities with the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory. The aim of this project was to design and prepare an experiment to characterise the capability of K-edge image measurements in radiography and tomography. Dilute alloys of gold in copper were designed, manufactured using an arc furnace, and characterised by independent EDS measurements. Samples from these alloys were then manufactured in an arrangement/shape designed by myself also. A statistical significance test of measurement was created, and a sample design and experimentation procedure was developed to enable future characterisation of capability. The project culminated in the production of a poster, presentation and report.Analysis of data was performed on Microsoft Excel, and presented using Microsoft PowerPoint. The project report was written within Microsoft Word. During this placement, I worked both within a team and individually to solve any problems that arose whilst working towards the projects aims. The original project aims were met, and further supplementary work was undertaken.
