My name is Camila Ceja and I was born and raised in the Bay Area by two immigrants from Mexico. Growing up in Richmond, a city known for its history of crime, the immigrant community and its ability to unite, has inspired me to work for community building and change. This past year I graduated from UC Berkeley with honors double major in Ethnic Studies and Comparative Literature (English + Spanish Literature). I am now a graduate student at Alder Graduate School of Education and a teacher resident in my hometown, bringing back my knowledge to my community and working to leverage justice in my English teachings. I have volunteered in schools in the Richmond, Oakland, and San Francisco Unified School District through 826 Valencia, OASES, and OUSD. After volunteering in schools and education organizations, I began to involve my community work with politics. I canvassed for Grassroots Campaigns in Berkeley, specializing in the efforts to continue the funding for Planned Parenthood. Later, I became involved in the labor movement, working as an organizer for SEIU, fighting for better conditions for essential workers deeply affected by COVID-19. I incorporated my love for community work, as well as my organizational experience into Soulstice Bay Area. Soulstice has not only become a creative outlet, but a substantial means of giving back to my community by creating awareness, inspiring creativity, and supporting young entrepreneurs of color in their efforts to break the cycle of poverty and underrepresentation.
