About Camila Belliard Quiroga
Camila María Belliard (She/her) is a Doctoral Candidate (Ph.Dc)C in Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at Rutgers University. She is a feminist social anthropologist and her research centers Black, migrant, femme, and queer communities through a transnational feminist lens. Analyzing the constructions of gender, sexuality, and race in Latin America and the Caribbean, her work focuses on South-South migration and anti-black racism. Camila started her Gender Studies research at the University of Chile, working on various research projects focusing on rural women's genealogies and heritage and health. In 2013, she joined a FONDECYT research project at the University of Chile, where she researched the intersections of gender, sexuality, and race in the experience of black Caribbean migrants. Her work substantively contributed to the study of processes of racialization between Chileans and the Afro-Caribbean immigrant communities In the Dominican Republic, her work has included research and intervention in the areas of gender, education, and development, health in marginalized black and migrant communities, and Dominican-Haitian heritage, sexual reproductive rights, amongst others. Her dissertation follows the life histories of Trans and Black women and their experiences of gendered and racial violence in the southeastern cane sugar and tourist provinces of San Pedro de Macoris and La Romana. Her ethnographic applied research in Chile and the Dominican Republic has made interventions in the areas of gender, development, sexual reproductive rights, anti-blackness, ethnic cultural production, and healing justice. She was awarded an International Fulbright Scholar Scholarship and is a Ph.D. to pursue her doctoral studies in Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at Rutgers-New Brunswick, where she has studied, taught, and worked for the last 7 years. Her dissertation follows the life histories and everyday lives of Trans and Black women's experiences and resistance to gendered and racial structural violence in the DR through collaborative interdisciplinary feminist decolonial research methods.Along with her doctoral studies she co-founded and coordinates Racial Justice Learning Community, an inaugural program at Rutgers’ Institute for Global Racial Justice, where she mentors undergraduate students. Beyond the university, she has collaborated with academic, nonprofit, and activist organizations in the DR.
