I was trained by Dr. Boyd Smith, MD the Pathologist in charge of the laboratory at St Johns Hospital back in 1994. His staff worked with me on the early am shift helping me learn the "Art" of collecting blood. Yes! I did say Art. If you are good at what you're doing then there's an Art form to it.After St Johns I moved to Mowery Clinic where I did nothing but collect specimens all day long. There were about 25 or so Drs working there and only one laboratory. So there were many days that we would run100+ patients through our Phlebotomy stations each day. I really loved working there because of all the patient interaction. We also collected a lot of children.In December 1999 I recieved a call from Specimen Specialist out of California wanting to know if I would be an Independent Contract Phlebotomist for hire. They had a need for a Phlebotomist here in Ks and had gotten my name from Dr Boyd Smith, MD. This is when and how my own company started Phlebotomy Services. Which I am still working at to this present day. My main job right now is being a stay at home wife. I was forced into "early retirement" by way of a Flu Shot. I got this Flu shot on November 6, 2004 and on the 10th I was placed in the hospital for the next 3 1/2 weeks because I was paralyzed from the waist down. The paralysis didn't stop there. It kept creeping up my body until it got to the lower lobes of mg lungs. I was put on oxygen and some very powerful drugs before the doctors could get it stopped. What was happening was I was becoming paralyzed and it wasn't going to stop until it got to my head. When it does that then your organs start shutting down and you pass on. But I am very thankful I had a wonderful Dr who diagnosed my condition right so I was able to get the right medical treatment. Unfortunately though I have not regained all of my movement and feelings back to my legs. I have trouble walking so I use an electric chair. My disease is called Transverse Myelitis.
