Senses Australia is the primary provider of disability services in WA. As the Senior Speech Pathologist at a newly established therapy site, I was intimately involved with forming interagency connections within the local region, advocating for Senses Australia and NDIS clients, and building a caseload of clientele. This role also had me recruiting a transdisciplinary team to provide therapy for NDIS funded clients. Implementing and evaluating discipline specific services for clients. Attending and participating in case conferences, team meetings and other service/project meetings. My personal caseload had me identifying the communication and swallowing needs of clients. Planning, developing, and delivering Speech Pathology programs and dysphagia management regimes relevant to client’s individual service plans in consultation with the client, relevant family members and carers. I also assessed and prescribed augmentative and alternative communication devices and adaptive and therapeutic equipment as required to meet individual client needs. This was done in consultation with other therapists, agencies, and family members.

As the Speech Pathology Team Leader for Victoria and Tasmania I played an integral role working in an integrated and holistic way to support the care and education of children within Goodstart Early Learning.In partnership with each Centre Director, Educators, and other key stakeholders, I engaged with state-wide Goodstart Early Learning Centres to engage and support the most vulnerable children and their families. My focus was on intervention strategies to enhance every child’s communication, emergent literacy, and social development.As the Speech Pathology Team Leader I worked alongside early years educators to strengthen their practice in providing communication and emergent literacy rich early learning environments.This was achieved by assisting educators and Centre Directors to identify developmental areas for the children within each centre. I also supported the care and education planning for individual children and the group, made referrals to allied health services and supported/coached the early years educators to better communicate and engage with parents regarding the needs of their child. In addition to working as part of a centre team, I provided line management, practice support as well as strength-based coaching and mentoring to other Speech Pathologists employed by Goodstart within Vic/Tas. Here I led and managed my team of Speech Pathologists whilst supporting multiple interstate Speech Pathologist. I provided individual mentoring to centre leadership teams to assist with whole centre implementation of key learning outcomes.Within this role I presented training sessions and workshops to large groups. These groups consisted of educators from centre leadership teams, allied health professionals, and individuals from outside agencies.

Within this role I provided Speech Pathology services to a mixed caseload within a rural area as part of a multidisciplinary team. This caseload included school age speech and language assessments and intervention, conducting functional assessments and intervention for people with disabilities and supporting them through the NDIS process, voice therapy, swallowing assessments, palliative care with private hospitals, nursing homes and group homes. In addition to this general clinical role, I conducted group dysphagia training session for outside agencies. These included educating nurses and disability support workers.

Within this role I provided Speech Pathology services within a range of settings, including private homes, group homes, the clinic, and within schools. Here I conducted assessments and intervention services to high need disability clients of all ages. This included prescribing augmentative and alternative communication devices, working with ASD clients, conducting paediatric swallowing assessments, and working with families to provide a holistic approach to disability support. These services are provided within a multidisciplinary team to ensure all intervention was holistic and functional.
