After studying political science and a 3 year teacher training course in the 1980's, India started pulling since 1990. After a few years visiting the country as a guest and later as an Aurovillian, my Indian wife and myself, along with our then 2,5 year old twins, settled down in 2006 in a small hamlet near the International Township of Auroville (http://auroville.org) and the coastal town of Puducherry, in South-India, I had to think about what to do next. It was there that my wife Jansi and I started AMAIDI Volunteering in India, inviting volunteers and travels to experience India 'the other way': giving something back.Amaidi still upholds the same motto, but more consciously now towards supporting local communities through supporting NGOs that work at the 'grassroots level'. By sending them volunteers and interns who in their actions align with the goals and aims of the NGO, we aspire to contribute to sustainable development worldwide, wherever needed. In other words: those we connect are invited to render their services, to transfer knowledge and support the capacity and sustainable development of the host organization and the communities they serve. Except for NGOs, AMAIDI partners with schools (from Pre-KG child care centers to university colleges), hospitals and social/care institutions for orphaned and (multiple handicapped) children and adults. Started off as a small organization, focused solely on (South-)India, Amaidi has grown over the years into a global social enterprise with a presence in more than 40 countries spread over 5 continents. In 2014 Amaidi reinvented itself in AMAIDI International gGmbH, with its headquarter no longer in India but in Germany. Around 75 people spread over all the countries we work in, are making Amaidi the way it currently is, lead by the visionary Tanja Siebert, it's new CEO, while I am busy trying to find my artistic voice and carve out a living as a painter and a teacher combined. Since my wife passed away in 2014, I embarked on a terrific journey that took me from raising my twins (nearing 20) on my own (with the Universe as a back up) to starting a career-on-the-side as a visual artist, specializing as a portrait painter, to a career in education - from teacher to coach - to a newly found love that trumps everything else in life. I am blessed with being able to walk tall and aware of all the changes that shaped me to be the person as the outer layer of my soul, typing these words today. I hope that in the near future our educational system will change from being curriculum-centered to being truly child-centered.
