About Carlos Monroy

I am the director of the Data-Inspired Discovery and Algorithmic Fairness Lab (DID*AF Lab https://didaflab.stthom.edu) at UST and also the academic advisor to the Celts Computing Club. Previously at Rice University, I worked as Research Scientist and Data Scientist with the Department of Computer Science and the Rice Center for Digital Learning and Scholarship respectively. Throughout my career, I have been interested in sense making, specifically in the synergies between computing and socio-technical approaches for advancing discovery. I also work on what I call Learninformatics (term coined during an NSF Big Data Ideas Lab), which can be defined as an interdisciplinary approach to develop and improve methods for storing, curating, organizing and analyzing learning data.As a Data Scientist for STEMscopes™, my work focused on learning analytics and the big data generated by nearly half a million students and over 50,000 teachers that used an on-line science curriculum. My research at the Center for the Study of Digital Libraries at Texas A&M contributed to the creation and development of various digital repositories. My interests include data and text mining, information retrieval, sociotechnical systems and computer science pedagogy.
