We provide a platform to help encourage and cultivate students’ ability to critically analyze and vocalize various perspectives on controversial worldly knowledge. The University of Calgary Debate Society [UCDS] provides both a competitive and non-competitive environment for young debaters to challenge themselves and peers to take sides on issues and vouch for alternative perspectives from their own. The UCDS offers a competitive branch: The Intercollegiate Debate Team, who travel nationally to compete. As Elected Officials of the University’s Student’s Union, we act as liaison’s not only between the faculty and the rest of the university, but between the members of the faculty as well. As one of the student representatives, specifically in a faculty that has demanding clinical requirements, it’s important to not only connect students to resources that the Student’s Union provide, but also give agency to express and vocalize changes they would like to see. As one of the student representatives, specifically in a faculty that has demanding clinical requirements, it’s important to not only connect students to resources that the Student’s Union provide, but also give agency to express and vocalize changes they would like to see. Creating a platform, where students’ perspectives are able to be placed alongside the careful rationale and consideration of the staff, is where my role as the Faculty Representative functions. The executive works to create equal access to smaller universities and connect them with other schools and competitive teams in their area, making competitive logistically feasible.Intercollegiate competition, specifically in debate requires oversight; oversight is needed to protect liberal ideas from becoming offensive and encouraging knowledge over negligence.
