My first introduction to studying Spanish was in high school. After learning from Sra. Sandra Stinson and Sr. John Boyst at JH Rose High School, I was an unashamed enthusiast of the Spanish language and culture. I also had the fortune of being able to travel to Mexico for an exchange program which greatly boosted my confidence in being able to communicate in Spanish, even though I was a fairly new student of the language.During my undergraduate studies at East Carolina University I enrolled in a summer program held in the famed city of Salamanca. This course gave me a language immersion experience as well as the opportunity to take several excursions to historic sites in surrounding areas. Years later during my career as a Spanish teacher, I was able to travel to Ecuador with a group of students. It was enriching to note the unique expression of the culture there as contrasted with what I had experienced in Mexico and Spain. These first-hand encounters enhanced my capability of conveying the richness and diversity of Hispanic culture to my students.I have had the privilege of teaching Spanish to students in grades PreK through high school. I have also been able to facilitate ESL classes to Hispanic adults through a community college program. This particular experience was rewarding beyond words.In addition to being a classroom teacher, I also tutor students at both high school and university levels. This experience helps me to sharpen and maintain fundamentals of the Spanish language as well as implement various language acquisition and retention strategies with my clients.My personal philosophy is that language is for effective communication, and although components such as grammar and spelling are necessary elements of language instruction, the most important takeaway for students is to be able to interact with others in a meaningful way. Communication, not perfection is the goal.
